A little about this project...
Hi! I’m Molly.
I’m a writer, a performer, and a person with a rare immune condition that has strong opinions about my calendar.
I read an embarrassing amount of self-help. Books, podcasts, the researchers, the monks, the neuroscientists, the ladies with journals. I love all of it. I spot the patterns fast and I go down the rabbit holes so you don’t have to. Although honestly, you should. Rabbit holes are my favorite place.
But I’m a little nuts. (Lovingly nuts…but, ya know). Most people read this stuff, nod, underline a sentence, and go back to their lives. I don’t have that option. If I only think about the ideas and never do them, I get sick. Literally. So I do them. I read, I think, I move, I reflect, and then I take the action. Every day. Not because I’m disciplined. Because I’m motivated by consequences.
I’ve spent thirty two years being sick on a pretty much daily basis. I have a disease called Common Variable Immune Deficiency in which my body makes zero antibodies. This wreaks havoc on my day to day life, so I’ve had to really focus on what keeps me semi-healthy.
On top of my primary immune condition, I also have a bipolar 2 diagnosis. I loosely wear that title. I like to say I’m bipolar “lite”, and I don’t really know what that means except I do know I’m not like most people.
My entire life is about figuring out balance. The obstacle to this is: ME.
This is a newsletter about living in the middle. That’s where I am most days. Not fully sick, not fully well. I spent years waiting to land on one side and I’ve stopped waiting. The middle is where the interesting stuff happens- we’ve all heard that before. But it’s true.
So that’s what you’ll find here. Self-help, road-tested on a body with other plans. Essays about what I’m trying. Rabbit holes worth falling into. The occasional song, because I can’t help it.
I read, listen, speak about, sing about, perform illness through the lens of creativity. This is my passion project, but I also write musicals and perform at a fairly high level. Sometimes I will write about the artist career and help others find their way.
One thing before you subscribe. This is not a support group. It’s a rehearsal room. I have real diagnoses, mental and physical, and they talk to each other constantly. I take them seriously and really try to apply all my research to my body and mind.
I try not to spend to much time on complaining, although there is room for that too. But mostly we do growth. We take action. We try our best to make a commitment to life. If you’re sick, or stuck, or 50, (I just turned 50 this year!) or all three, and you want to get better at being alive anyway, come in. You’re my people.
I’m so glad you’re here!
Molly
